Bring Your Kids: Torrey Pines State Reserve

Factoid: the rarest native pine tree in the US is right here in San Diego.  We have a stretch of protected coast named for it.  The Torrey Pines State Reserve is one of the most beautiful stretches of ocean here in Southern California and it is an awesome place to bring your kids for some outdoor time especially if you like geeking out on nature.

I'll spare you the history, because you'll probably stop reading, but let me encourage you to go and let the docents tell you.  Pack up the kids with some sturdy shoes and go nuts.  Peruse the nature center and check out some of the most awesome taxidermy I've ever seen.  If you go on the weekends, there are guided nature walks that, based on my brief encounter with the docents, are probably really informative.  The trails are kid friendly, but maybe not for strollers.  I saw some people with strollers trucking up the paved road for some excercise, but the trails are better for a back pack carrier as opposed to something on wheels.

The day use fee is $12 on weekdays and $15 on weekends and holidays.  You can find the details here. This fee is just to bring your car in and park at the top of the hill.  Otherwise, you can park at the bottom and walk up, but depending on your kids, this may be too strenuous.  We drove up and I'm glad I spent the money.  We tailgated with snacks and drinks after hiking, but there are no picnics allowed in the reserve.  You can bring water on the trails, but that's about it.  If you have any questions about any of this, the docents will help you as well as highlighting trails that will be best for kids.  If you get hungry after hiking, there are a ton of San Diego's super delicious restaurants close by to hit up.

So...don't you want to go see it?!  The weather has been so hot and sticky here lately, but the ocean breeze is a welcome break to the heat and humidity inland.  I can't wait to go back in the Spring when there is a lot of life happening. Plus, with all my kids starting school tomorrow, it may be a choice location for some exercise! Let's go together.

And now: Photo overload
